What is the Green Card lottery?
A Green Card is a document that allows its holder to live permanently in America. With a Green Card, one can legally work, visit relatives and friends, vacation, study, do business, travel, buy real estate in the US, etc. In general, a person becomes almost an “American”, deciding for himself or herself where to live and what to do. To use an official term, the Green Card is a residence permit in the USA. Every year, the US government officially holds a drawing for 50,000 Green Card documents.
A green card holder does not need a US visa – they can come and go as they please. The only requirement: it is advisable to stay in the USA for at least 6 months per year. “The Green Card is issued in perpetuity, so if one does not commit a crime or leave the US for a long time, this status will remain forever.
After five years of green card ownership, one can apply for US citizenship, which offers some additional benefits and removes the 6-month requirement to stay in the US. Once a person acquires US citizenship, he or she becomes a true American.
